Energy and Sustainability

The 2014 Energy Reform opened up a host of new opportunities for mine operators in Mexico. They can now take more control over their energy expenses than ever before. Three years down the line, an increasing number of metal producers are making the transition into the energy sector in a bid to cut costs, while ever-improving technology is boosting productivity and encouraging the use of renewable resources. This chapter will focus on the most ambitious and important energy generation projects being undertaken by metal producers that pioneer in this fields like Fresnillo, Industrias Peñoles and Grupo México and consider the impact of these projects on corporate performance. It will also look at the service providers helping these companies make the transition as smooth as possible.

Finally, this chapter will consider the impact of mining operations on the environment and assess how companies can limit their footprint and increase their use of “green” solutions through the adoption of new technologies and best practices.
